This past summer three convicted killers of three young children went to a courtroom in Arkansas to confess under oath that they had committed the murders. (For all of the twenty or so years since their convictions they had all insisted they were innocent.) As soon as they lyingly confessed to being guilty they were all set free.

You wondering why that happened? Well. in Arkansas they can’t release people whom everybody knows are innocent unless they first commit perjury by swearing they’re guilty. It’s called an “Alford plea,” and it’s the law. And we all know what Charles Dickens said the law was.
