I grew up on Long Island and visited relatives in Manhattan countless times, but Brooklyn is essentially Terra Incognita. So these insights into its neighborhoods and features is interesting and informative.

You were using voting machines in New York State back in 1932? Wow. Canada is still using good old reliable pencil and paper, but I can see how the sheer number of offices that Americans vote for makes a punch-card form convenient.

thanks for this one and for giving us all the house numbers. I remembering once looking your father up in an old 1930s Brooklyn telephone directory and finding another Fred Pohl in Brooklyn Heights -- a travel writer; no relation.

The Interstate Highway system is one of the Twentieth Century's greatest monuments to Unintended Consequences.
The overwhelming majority of the country now lives in suburbs. For most Americans, there's cars and malls.
