I enjoyed Harry Harrison a great deal. As an avid reader, a testament to my librarian grandmother, several books went to sea with me in the 80's when it was my shipmates and I's turn to crew the Henry L. Stimson. The Stainless Steel Rat went to sea with me and while my shipmates watched another movie they had already seen a dozen times, I was ready to enjoy some of his unique humor.

Alas — and unsurprisingly — the Times obituary did not start on A1 of the print edition (see http://www.nytimes.com/images/2012/08/17/nytfrontpage/scan.jpg). Glad to see, however, that I wasn't the only one who noticed that gratuitous snub of SF with which Mr. Martin saw fit to begin his piece. Can't let a good feces-flinging opportunity pass, eh? Harry deserved much better than that — though, as you observe, the quality picked up after that awful start.
