“The only thing that part of the world had that was worth having was underground, and they pumped it out and sold it long ago.”

Don't forget the beautiful So Cal weather. I've enjoyed visiting most areas of the country but I've always enjoyed getting back home.

I too have a half-dozen or more anthologies edited by Mr. Greenberg, sitting on my bookshelves. Thanks for this glimpse at the man behind the name. He obviously had good taste in friends, as well as SF.

There is one overwhelming advantage to living a long time, despite all of the disadvantages and random humiliations of the failing body - you meet some pretty damned nice people

This is such a great post, thank you for sharing that great story. I am saddened to hear about the passing of Martin H. Greenberg. I have many anthologies on my shelves that he edited, like the Writers of the 21st Century Series that both Joe Olander and Martin edited. He will be missed.

The only school that sounded like they might want to have me was a little one in, I think, Southern California, about which, my friend Jack Williamson said when I applied to him for advice, “The only thing that part of the world had that was worth having was underground, and they pumped it out and sold it long ago.”

Hearing that from somebody who hails from Portales, New Mexico, you've got to take it seriously.
