Delighted to read more and more of this 1978 conversation, but it should be noted that the 1976 Bester omnibus Starlight: The Great Short Fiction of Alfred Bester includes an essay on the writing of "Fondly Fahrenheit" that touches on many of the same points he makes in this transcript.

(Starlight is a Bester collection that any fan should seek out because of the very entertaining story notes - particularly concerning the influence of Dianetics on John W. Campbell Jr. and how this affected his attitude toward Bester's story "Oddy and Id" - but he ought not to have rewritten his late-'50s story "The Pi Man" for this collection; even the names of the two named characters were changed, and not for the better.)

I re-read "Fondly Fahrenheit" just a few days ago, in volume 1 of The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, so this post came along at a wonderful time for me. It's always been one of my favorite sf stories, let alone one of my favorite Bester stories. I only met Bester once, at a Lunacon back in the 70s. He was a charming man, very approachable and good-humored. As I recall, he delivered an informative and funny lecture but I don't recall the topic.

It's probably more than 30 years since I last read "Fondly Fahrenheit", but -- although I'm a bit embarassed to admit I didn't remember Alfie was the author -- it made enough of an impression to instantly summon up the plot.

Thanks for sharing these wonderful insights into how a great writer works.

This is one of the best things you've blogged -- the back and forth between you and Bester is great!
