Having lived in Los Angeles, I chuckle at describing airport to Century City as "clear across" much of anything.

One minor correction; while Apollo 17 did launch on December 7th, specifically at 00:33, it was originally scheduled to launch as the first night launch on December 6th at just before 22:00. There were 2 hours 40 minutes of launch holds that pushed it to early the next day. Full details at http://history.nasa.gov/SP-4029/Apollo_17a_Summary.htm

Why do I remember this? Because I was a big space nut as a kid, and those few hours of holds meant that the launch ended up happening on my birthday. Best unexpected and inadvertent present ever. : -)
