It’s called The Messenger; it stars Woody Harrelson and it’s the story of a lifer Army captain and a used-up, shot-over staff sergeant who get assigned to the stressful job of bringing to GI families the news that their son, father or husband has just been killed in Afghanistan.

I never heard of anyone in the cast but Harrelson and expected little from the film. But it really got to me. I think it would to you, too.

    Thanks for the suggestion, Frederik.

This is a great recommendation. I can’t remember watching a movie that explored the cost of war in this manner. I found myself wondering which was worse, being a recipient of a visit, or delivering that news, day after day, year after year? And, in the course of all those deliveries, at what point do you decide to check in your humanity at the front desk, and forget to come back?

Actually I did expect to like it beforehand. contrary to the usual movie experience, I was not disappointed – the opposite is true, if anything I came out liking it even more than I thought I would.
